White water kayaking in Sri Lanka - skills week
9th - 15th September, 2018
Join us for a week long course of white water skills development on the Kelani river, Kithulgala, Sri Lanka. This journey is designed for kayakers who already have have decent boat control in flat water (for UK paddlers, ideally you've already achieved British Canoeing 2-star). Experience in moving or white water is not necessary.
The lower Kelani river is a good 7km run of class I, II and III rapids. We will spend each day combining white water skills development with river runs, tailored to each person's aspirations and personal goals. Trips to Marvel Canyon, a small nearby trib that flows into the Kelani will be arranged as well. This is a great place for having fun on slides and jumps.
The water and air temperature are both wonderfully warm, so there is plenty of time to practice rolls and rescues without getting cold and work on your own development in an idyllic environment.
Towards the end of the week, for those that want to, we can explore the upper Kelani River, a 4km run of class III to IV white water.
All of the kayakers running the course are highly experienced, skilled safety kayakers, who've had extensive river safety and rescue training. You'll be in very safe hands. Kayaking trips will be led by Lahiru Prasad.
If these dates don't suit you, we can arrange bespoke individual or group kayaking trips from half a day in duration up to one week.
activities in Kithulgala
Kithulgala is a small town only 2 hours from the capital Colombo. Lush rainforests surround the town and there are plenty of extra activities we can arrange, whether camping, hiking, bird watching, mountain biking, abseiling, cave exploring or rafting. Additional activities are not included in the price, but can be arranged at a great rate using our friends in the local community.
Accommodation in Kithulgala
Accommodation will be in the hills with fantastic views of surrounding mountains, about a ten minute tuk tuk ride from the put in of the upper Kelani. Spacious double or triple rooms all with en-suite bathrooms will be provided. The accommodation has its own restaurant and swimming pool, but Kithulgala itself has plenty of places to eat, which is why we've left food off the price so that you can decide where you want to eat each day - local food is incredibly affordable.
